Invisibility in Automation Systems
Most DevOps teams and n8n administrators face a similar challenge: how do you know what’s actually happening inside an n8n instance? Is the instance running correctly, and are there any delays? Have any credentials expired? Of course, the traditional approach – manually checking logs – is possible, but time-consuming and error-prone – so it’s best to automate the machine!
When you have dozens or hundreds of workflows, intuition and occasional checks are no longer enough. You need a system that:
- Automatically collects data on audits and failures
- Visualizes trends in real time
- Integrates with your existing monitoring stack
What is InfluxDB and why is it important?
InfluxDB is a database optimized for storing time-series data—that is, time-stamped data where time is the central dimension. Unlike traditional relational databases (like PostgreSQL or MySQL), InfluxDB is designed from the ground up to support:
- High write throughput – thousands of data points per second
- Fast queries – responses in milliseconds
- Scalability – expands with data growth
Each data point in InfluxDB contains:
- Timestamp – when it happened
- Fields – values (numbers, strings, booleans)
- Tags – metadata for filtering and grouping
For example, if you’re storing information about a workflow failure, you can store:

tags: workflow_name="sync_users", environment="production"This allows you to quickly answer questions like: “How often has the sync_users workflow crashed in production in the last 7 days?”
Of course, you can connect this automation to other TSDBs, but InfluxDB works best for me. However, you won’t have any problems adapting this workflow to other databases. Grafana, for example, has built-in support for InfluxDB. You can create dashboards directly with InfluxDB data and even set alerts.
How does this automation work?
The workflow for monitoring audits and crashes with InfluxDB is built on three simple steps:
Step 1: Collecting Data from n8n
The workflow uses native n8n nodes to retrieve data directly from your instance. This requires an API Key – an access key to the n8n API, which you can generate in the instance settings.
What data does it collect?
- Workflow execution history
- Number of successes and errors
- Execution time
- Error details (if any)
Step 2: Transforming the data to InfluxDB format
The data from n8n must be reformatted so that InfluxDB can index it correctly. The workflow performs this transformation by converting the JSON from n8n to a time series format that InfluxDB understands.
This is a crucial step – without it, your data would be sent to InfluxDB, but it would be unreadable.
Step 3: Sending to InfluxDB
Finally, the workflow will send the reformatted data to your InfluxDB instance via HTTP API. The data is immediately transferred to the bucket (data container) and is available for queries.

Simple Configuration
The deployment process is very simple. You only need three environment variables:
- InfluxDB URL – e.g.,
https://influxdb.example.com:8086 - InfluxDB Organization – the name of your InfluxDB organization
- InfluxDB Bucket Name – the bucket where the data will be stored (e.g.,
n8n_monitoring)
And, of course, two keys:
- n8n API Key – in the n8n instance settings
- InfluxDB Token – your InfluxDB access token (with appropriate permissions)
Then, simply enter these values in the automation variables and you’re done! You can run the workflow.
How often should you run an audit?
It depends on your needs.
For smaller instances, even once a week may be sufficient.
For most teams, we recommend running the audit once a day (e.g., at 2:00 AM, when the server is less busy). This provides:
- Sufficient data for trend analysis
- Doesn’t overload the n8n instance
- Maintains an up-to-date picture of the system’s health
For teams with sensitive automations, it’s worth increasing the frequency to 4 hours. This gives you a near-real-time view.
For teams with critical automations, this workflow is not a solution. You should set up an error reporting method in your critical workflow to be immediately informed of any potential issues.
